2009 - 2010 Energy Season:
- An early start for Energy Applications was approved for August 3rd this year.
- As of December 28th we have processed 8,213 applications and 5,640 have been approved for an award.
2009 - 2010 Wx (Weatherization) Program:
- CAANH has completed 80% of our goal for weatherizing homes.
- Note - participation in Wx requires prior certification for Energy assistance.
2008 - 2009 Program Successes:
- During our Energy season, 14,914 individual applications were taken, serving approximately 35,000 families in the New Haven area.
- 12,217 of those individuals were eligible for Energy assistance
- Only 2,662 applications were denied either because they were over the income guidelines or because they had incomplete documentation
According to the data released from the Department of Social Services (DSS) on May 26, 2009. The Community Action Agency of New Haven (CAANH) serviced more people this year than ever before. In fact, CAANH is the third highest ranking Community Action Agency in the state to achieve these numbers.
Our Weatherization program achieved its 08-09 goals as well.
Personal Finance
Individual Development Accounts (IDA) - IDA matched savings programs provide education for 1st time homeownership, post secondary, and business entrepreneurial education. This includes a 10-week FDIC approved course "Money Smart" which offers basic information concerning credit repair, loans, budgeting, homeownership, retirement savings, and other financial issues. Participants receive training in how to acquire specific assets and guidance with the process of saving for and attaining their goal. Participants also receive intensive case management to help them thru any problems that may arise and to stick to their savings agreement. Participant's savings are matched 2 to 1 and between $500 and $1000 can be matched per calendar year.
Manage Your Future (MYF) - designed to provide summer employment for youth that gives them the best opportunity to develop the skills and competencies needed to move forward in life. Manage Your Future provides New Haven youth between the ages of 14 and 18 years old with meaningful employment opportunities at various worksites throughout the city. This six week summer program provides practical work experience, financial education, savings, planning, and employability skills training. Mandatory workshops based on workplace diversity, behavior, attitudes, and attire are integrated into job training sessions facilitated by area instructors from the human services, business, and academic fields. Participants work 25 hours per week, making weekly deposits towards their pre-set goal for asset acquisition. This program also incorporates a unique opportunity for youth participants to become financially educated by participating in the youth Individual Development Account (IDA) Program. At the end of the summer program, these youth have their savings of up to $500 matched, and used for educational expenses.
