Yes! We Are Moving!

Looking Forward

By Isadora Del Vecchio

CAANH is pleased to announce that we are moving to 419 Whalley Avenue.  We are slated to move in the Spring of 2012. Our new location boasts 18,000 sq.ft. of highly functional and usable space. The layout of the first floor is dedicated to better meeting the needs of our customers by mimicking our “No Wrong Door” policy concerning client intake. Kate Walton, A Development Associate at CAANH says that, “the reconfigured space will allow us to deliver primary services more efficiently, will give more privacy to our customers, and be a better setting for providing family services. Most exciting will be the new computer learning center and training facilities that will allow us to enhance our employment and educational programming.”

We will have a bigger lobby for customer comfort and our new community room holds 50-75 people.  A key aspect to this move is its physical and geographic location. Melody Vasquez, An Energy Caseworker, thinks that the location is better because, “it is more central. We are at the heart of everything.”  Melody is correct, not only will we be at the heart of everything, but we will be the center of the intersection of six neighborhoods.  Our 5x5 initiative will draw upon a 5 block radius surrounding the agency that spans 6 neighborhoods.  We believe that in order to have large scale community impact we must mobilize a section of the community, enroll them in our vision for the future, and take action toward the change we want to see in the community.

We are committed to creating smart change and developing new intellectual capital from our staff, clients, partners, and community stakeholders.  Creating great performance is about people. Our move to 419 Whalley is a step toward being in action surrounding our vision for an inspired future.   It is our plan to organize at a granular level—to reconnect, engage, and foster relationships with the population in a 5x5 block. This area includes at least six communities where people are dissected by political boundaries and do not feel a connection to one another.  The population includes residents, faith based organizations, small and large businesses, community groups, and nonprofit agencies.  It includes young people, old people, and anyone who feels connected to that particular community.

These powerful community institutions or groups will come together to create a common agenda for transformation and prosperity. We will design 5-10 population level results that will transform the community such that residents and key stakeholders are touched, moved and inspired. This type of change will cause, for example, residents to register to vote, youth to enter college in higher numbers, increase employment, decreases in poverty, and will ameliorate the conditions associated infant mortality. We are in the process of developing a multi-year multi-phase plan that spans 10-20 years. Phase One, is an introduction and vision enrollment within the community, Phase Two, includes outreach to local partners, and Phase Three, includes community discovery.
